1825- Lindane, also known as hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), is synthesized by Michael Faraday6
 
1853- Stanislao Cannizzaro obtains benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid from the treatment of benzaldehyde with potash7
 
1858- Pyrethrum, the first of the pyrethroid insecticides, derived from the Dalmation Chrysanthemum [C. cinerariaefolium], was first used in the US8
 
1932- German chemist Willy Lange and his graduate student, Gerde von Krueger, first described the nervous system effects of organophosphates (the family of compounds which includes malathion and certain nerve gases) in mammals9
 
1942- Lindane's insecticidal properties are discovered6
 
1951- Malathion is first registered for insecticidal use in the US9
 
1974- The avermectins, including ivermectin are discovered when isolated from a naturally occurring soil organism found in a routine soil sample in Japan10
 
1981- Ivermectin is approved by the US FDA to control certain parasites in domestic mammals10
 
1987- Ivermectin receives formal regulatory clearance for use in humans by the French Directorate of Pharmacy and Drugs. It is indicated to control onchocerciasis (river blindness), and distribution begins through the Mectizan Donation Program in equatorial Africa10,11
 
2005- Topaz Pharmaceuticals begins research and development on a novel topical form of ivermectin. This formulation is currently under clinical investigation as a potential therapy to treat head lice. Learn more about ivermectin.
